It comes from Latin mappa, which denoted a ‘cloth’, ‘towel’, ‘sheet’, ‘table-cloth’, etc. This was used in the expression mappa mundī, literally ‘sheet of the world’, which referred to a graphical representation of the earth’s surface – a ‘map’, in other words.
